On Saturday at LIU’s Brooklyn campus, Boys & Girls defeated Long Island Luthern, 65-62, in the SNY Invitational consolation game. Below are player reviews for both teams:
Boys & Girls
Anotine Slaughter ’11 PG - The 5’6″ point guard was easily one of the best players on the floor against LuHi, especially in the 2nd half. Slaughter stays incredibly low while driving to the basket. The junior has a good floater which is effective in the paint over bigger defenders. He knocked down several mid-range jumpers throughout the game. The attribute that was most impressive was his defensive play. After guarding 6’7″ Shane Southwell from Rice at times on Friday, Slaughter was matched up with either LuHi’s Achcraf Yacoubou (6’3 200 lbs.) or Hart Gliedman (6’4″ 195 lbs.) over the course of the game on Saturday. Slaughter demonstrated great leadership while dishing off several assists to get teammates open shots. The junior lead guard turned it up when Boys & Girls needed someone to step up.
Jeff Neverson ’12 F - The super sophomore was an important piece of Boys & Girls comeback win. His aggressiveness on the offensive glass was beneficial down the stretch. Neverson pulled down five offensive rebounds in the win. To go along with his nine total rebounds, the 6’4″ wing dished out four assists. Neverson didn’t shoot the ball much from the outside, but instead went to hoop and finished strong. He finished the game with an extremely impressive stat-line. Neverson scored 12 points (4-8 FG, 4-5 FT), pulled down 9 nine rebounds (5 off.) and had four assists to go along with two steals.
Leroy Isler ’10 F- After not shooting the ball well to start, Isler punished LuHi’s big men later in the game. He was aggressive in the paint as he was finishing put-backs on a constant basis. The senior forward knocked down five of his final seven shots. At 6’4″, Isler was dominant in the post. He grabbed 9 boards, seven of which were on the defensive end. He ran the floor well and was rewarded often with easy layups. Isler played with a high defensive intensity which was displayed throughout the game. Isler’s athleticism was shown against LuHi early and often. He finished difficult plays by using an array of moves to get around his defender.
LuHi
Achraf Yacoubou ’11 G/F - Yacoubou started th game slow on offense but picked it up when his team needed it most. He nailed several three-pointers to put his team ahead in the 2nd half. He demonstrated an incredible feel for the game on both sides of the court. He drove the ball to the hoop while being pressured, and pulled up for a jumpshot when given space. He was aggressive on the defensive end as well. Yacoubou guarded players both inside the paint along with smaller guards on the perimeter. Yacoubou finished with a game-high 24 points. In 32 minutes of play, the junior guard shot 8-16 from the floor and knocked down three key three-pointers.
Hart Gliedman ’10 F - At 6’4″, Gliedman can play multiple positions on the floor. Against Boys & Girls on Saturday, the senior displayed his versatility. By connecting with two of his first three 3PT attempts, Gliedman was also effective in the paint. He has the ability to finish with contact in the post. Gliedman gave LuHi multiple opportunities on the offensive end because of his hustle under the boards. The senior finished the game with five offensive rebounds (eight total). He knocked down several pull-up jumpers when the defense backed off. Gliedman wasn’t nearly as effective in the 2nd half as he was the 1st, while ending with nine points in the game.
Terry Brutus ’10 F – The 6’5″ big man finished the game with a double-double. But the impressive stat-line didn’t come easily for Brutus. Going up against a hard-nosed Boys & Girls squad, Brutus earned every basket he scored and each rebound he pulled down. His size was used to his advantage in the post. The big man played a quiet game compared to teammates Yacoubou and Gliedman. Brutus shot 80% from the floor (4-5 FG), 100% from the charity-stripe (2-2 FT) and grabbed an impressive 11 defensive rebounds. The senior had 10 points to go along with his game-high 13 rebounds.
