New Doors Open for Sledge

New Doors Open for Sledge

Extreme athleticism, great court vision and incredible ball-handling; all the characteristics that fit into Tavon Sledge’s game. The 5′9″ 155 lbs. Half Hollow Hills West point guard is ready to show everyone what type of player he can be…

Upon a transfer from St. Benedict’s Prep in New Jersey, the court-savvy guard decided to join Tennessee-bound 2010 forward Tobias Harris.

“[A] better academic system and a better support system,” says Sledge on the reasons for the departure from the Gray Bees coached by Dan Hurley.

The 2011 student-athlete has been at his new school since mid-September and has enjoyed every minute.

“It’s been great,” says Sledge. “The students and the teachers are really nice and are always willing to help with any problems in school.”

“It’s similar to St. Benedict’ as far as the family tradition. Everyone at Hills West if there to help someone in need.”

The decision to transfer schools was made after a superb summer with the Rich Soil/Team Odom AAU program. Coached by Mike Moore, Sledge was able to enhance his basketball skills by honing in what it takes to be a true lead guard in today’s game. All the fundamentals were in place for the crafty guard, but the junior has now put together all the pieces.

Sledge and his Rich Soil/Team Odom team won the Main Event tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada in July.

As a lightning-quick guard, Sledge drew the attention of many major college programs in the nation. Interest is currently coming from UConn, Providence, West Virginia, St. John’s and Fordham along with other suitors.

Sledge is not concerned with colleges at this moment, but instead focusing on the upcoming task at hand: Hills West basketball season.

After a disappointing season last year with a 7-13 record, the return of the Harris brothers from LuHi,  introduction of Sledge and play of role players such as Chris Cox and Emile Blackman, the future is looking bright for the Colts this season.

Winning a county championship, along with a state trophy are Sledge’s goals for the team. The extraordinary-athletic guard sets the bar on expectations for himself. These include being the best point guard on the team, playing a key role in contributing in the team’s effort every which way and creating team chemistry that was non-existent from last year’s squad.

If not for a select group of indiviuals, Sledge would not be in the position he is standing in right now; concerning basketball and academics.

Tavon’s father, Kwame Sledge, along with his uncle, Alvin Tony and coach Moore have been incredibly important in the success the new Hills West student-athlete has accomplished, both on-and-off-the-court.

Tavon Sledge has an enormous amount of potential in this game as a point guard. He can find his open-teammates and score the ball when he’s depended on. Aside from succeeding on the court, Sledge has been working harder than ever off the court to become a complete student-athlete.

The hard work and dedication will pay off for Sledge during his last two years of high school at Hills West.
