Suber Has The Great Combination Of Being Talented And Coachable
Dashawn Suber is a 5 foot 11 rising sophomore at Rice High in Manhattan. The speedy playmaker, although young, understands the tradition of the quality of guards that Rice has produced in recent years.
And by the looks of things, he could be one of those names that people rattle off in the future when referring to Rice and their rich basketball tradition.
While working with the Gauchos this summer Paul Suber (Dashawn’s well known father, coach, and trainer) and myself routinely held workouts at the Gauchos Gym, which Dashawn took place in. While lots of other kids were sleeping in early in the summer and just playing AAU games Suber was in a different type of mode, constantly in the gym working out, talking about basketball, and watching basketball when he wasn’t working out or playing in a game.
Paul naturally went harder on his son in these workouts than he did on anybody else and while most kids might sulk and cry and give up sometimes in workouts, Dashawn rarely complained and went about working out in a business-like manner.
Now in this day and age, with all of the hype in NYC, it humbled me to see this. Especially for a kid that is just 15 years old and with a world of upside.
Suber’s game isn’t predicated on being overly athletic. Don’t get me wrong, Suber is quick as heck and boasts above average athleticism. But what separates this guard from most of his peers is his almost innate feel for how the game is played. He knows where everyone is supposed to be on the floor at all times. He shines when teams attempt to press him because he understands how the game works so well.
And once again, he is just 15 years old and I haven’t even discussed his skill set in this article (that will be under the player profiles shortly, so stay tuned).
According to Suber he has begun the recruiting process with the likes of St. Johns, Pitt, UConn, UNC, and Arizona beginning to show interest in him after a solid AAU season with the NY Gauchos, which he prides himself on making the Final Four in both the AAU Nationals and Super Showcase.
